Diptych

Catching a Cold

Straight Hair

Dancing Winner
For my Diptych project, it was hard at first to come up with ideas for before and after type of things. A lot of things I thought of I felt were previously used or too typical. I think my first one was my favorite and came out very successfully with my models as Chris and Julianne. The idea of somebody being too close to somebody sick and catching a cold I feel was one of the more creative ones I had. The models acted out their illness very well too!
My second diptych was of Nupur straightening her her. She did a very good job of frizzing up her hair in  the first photo and the second photo showed the results a hair straightener can have.
In my last photograph, I used Marlon who was a fantastic model! He was very into the dancing around in a skirt! The idea of this photograph was to show him dancing in the first picture and receiving an award for his excellence in the second. I had some trouble coming up with props for this photograph though. The only trophies I could find of my own had softball players on them. Also, the skirt was the closest thing to a tutu I could find. I figured by putting a boy in the skirt it would make the skirt stand out more and help show that he is a dancer. I think if I were to do this again I would have had Marlon in tights and found something that better resembled a tutu.

Project Graduation T-Shirt Design

Object Series

Book, Danielle Voelkel
For my object series I used a book and took pictures of it from different angles and doing different things, whether it was opened or closed, standing or sitting, or someone flipping a page. The object I originally wanted to potray was a softball but there was not much I could do with it besides just sit it there. I had other ideas as well but I think the book had the most options to make a series out of.
Overall, although the idea itself wasn't too creative, I think the series came out very good. I tried to go back into Macromedia to fix the lighting/ brightness of the photos to make them stand out more, but I had trouble getting them to all match up so I ended up saving most of them to how they were originally taken.

Surrealism Photo Montage

Surrealism Photo Montage, Bret
My original idea for this project was to have my brother or somebody else sleeping and having a bad dream going on around them. Such as fire or chaos going on in the background. I couldn't think of a way to incorporate those things so I started off with my brother sleeping on clouds. That came out really bad and that's when I decided to use the moon. From there I basically just went with the flow.
The photograph itself doesn't have any real meaning to me, but I wanted a way to show a dream. I used the dream catcher to show that it was a dream. My brother doesn't have any ambition to become an astronaut at all but everything just connected as I was going on. Overall it did not come out exactly how I wanted it to, but I still like the finished product.

Surrealism Theme

For my surrealism project, I plan on making it resemble a bad dream. I'm either going to photograph myself or somebody else laying on the ground sleeping and I am going to put them on the ground of my final project. They are going to be sleeping and the bad dream is going to be going on around them. I want to incorporate a dream catcher somewhere in the background as well. I'm not sure yet what the bad dream is going to be yet, but I'm thinking either a fire or the world ending, something along those lines.

Surrealism

Leonora Carrington
Leonora Carrington was a Mexican artist, surrealist painter, and novelist, born in Clayton Green, Chorley, Lancashire, England on April 6, 1917. She lived most of her life in Mexico City. She first recognized surrealism when her mother gave her a copy of Herbert Read’s book, ‘Surrealism’, although her family gave her very little encouragement to pursue an artistic career. In 1927, when she was ten years old, she saw her first Surrealist painting in a Left Bank gallery. She had the opportunity to meet other Surrealists like Paul Eluard. She was largely influenced by Max Ernst. The first important exhibit of her work was showcased at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York City in 1947. At this time she was the only professional female English painter. In 2005, Christie’s auctioned “Juggler” for $713,000, which set a record for the highest price paid at an auction for a living surrealist painter. Leonora Carrington died in Mexico City on May 25, 2011 due to complications from pneumonia.
Martin Stranka
Martin Stranka is a self-taught professional surrealist photographer from the Czech Republic, born on April 13, 1984. His vision of photography is shown as a type between balance and serenity. He has won over 30 international photography awards such as, Professional Photography of the Year, Emerging Talent Award in Nikon International Photo Contest, International Photo Awards, Sony World Photography Awards or Digital Photographer of the Year two times in a row. He has also created book covers for the biggest New York publishers like Harper Collins Publishers or Sterling Publishing.

Bird Bath, Leonora Carrington

Artist’s Name: Leonora Carrington
Title:
Bird Bath
Date:
1978
Description:
Two women standing over a bird bath. Birds are incorporated often throughout the picture such as the cut out in the house, the women on the left’s face, the person in the back holding a bird, and the obvious big red bird inside the bird bath.
Analysis:
This vertical piece is much focused I feel on the red bird in the bath. The bright red color used as the bird causes it to stand out as the focus of this piece.
Interpretation:
It is very difficult for me to interpret this piece. It seems like it’s very dark because of the colors used in the sky and ground, and also the people’s clothing. They are old and scary and look like they are cleaning the bird.
Judgment:
I find this piece to be successful just because it really makes somebody who is looking at it wonder what the artist was thinking when she made it.

I Found The Silence, Martin Stranka
Artist’s Name: Martin Stranka
Title:
I Found The Silence
Date:
2012
Description:
There is a man who is walking on the a dirt surface of the Earth and he is shielding himself from everything flying around him. The sky is dark and cloudy and it the man seems scared or to be trying to get away from anything.
Analysis:
The focus of this piece is the man walking in the center of the photograph. The photograph also includes leading line which leads to the direction in which he is walking away from.
Interpretation:
My interpretation of this photograph is that the man is walking away from the world ending behind him. You can tell that there is chaos all around him and it seems he has just given up and decided to walk away from at all.
Judgment:
I really like this piece as well as many other photographs by Martin Stranka. He is a current surrealist artist who brings a lot to all of his photographs and this was one of my favorites. The lighting and colors all worked very well.

Comparison: These two artists, although very different, are also very much alike. Both of their pieces of work that are shown above both seems to have a dark meaning to them. I don’t know what was intended with ‘Bird Bath’, but it also has frightening aspects to it. They are different though because all of Martin Stranka’s photographs follow the same dark, golden color scheme, when Leonora Carrington uses multiple dull colors in her pictures.

David Hockney Inspired Collage

Bret

Fireplace
The first photograph is a collage of my brother. He was not very cooperative and he was stubborn while I was taking pictures of him. I chose to take this photographs in my basement where the lighting was very good and I could have a solid background. I took many pictures of him to make sure that i got every aspect of his face.
The second photograph is a collage of the fireplace set-up I have in my backyard. I chose to photograph this because I like the scenery. I originally wanted to take this picture with the fire lit to make it more interesting but my dad said no... I really like the way this came out although some spots are darker or lighter than others and everytime I went to change the lighting it dulled down the photo.

Partner Portraiture

When making this photograph it was hard to get it so that both pictures were being taken from the same angle.  I think that it came out successfully, but overall I feel as if we could have been more creative in coming up with an idea.

Recreate Your Childhood

I chose this picture because I thought it would be somewhat easy to recreate and I wanted to show the change in all of us over 12 years.

Portrait Series

Analysse Nicole Rivera, 2012

My photographs are of my best friend’s daughter, Analysse. I’ve decided to photograph her because she is my favorite baby in the world and all babies are cute! For being just almost 4 months old, she cooperated very well and was very happy. The time of the day I took the portraits was perfect because the natural lighting that came through the windows really helped.
The photo on the bottom left of her feet is one of my favorites because of the angle and the lighting. I like the way her feet cast a shadow on the blanket and how all the focus is on her feet. I’m very pleased with how my portrait series came out and Analysse was great to photograph.

Photo Walk

"Lockers"
I find this photograph interesting because I like the angle that it is on and how it follows a leading line. The reason it is my favorite is because it is a leading line which makes it a good photo and I like the way it captures the lockers.
